One of the most common things I hear in my chair is, "Priscilla, why does my beautiful hair color look so dull just a few weeks after I leave the salon?"
Last month, my client Evangeline came in looking frustrated. She said, "I got balayage three weeks ago. It cost $485. Now it looks washed out and dull. Why is this happening?"
I said, "Let me tell you what happened when I first started doing color in Miami. It'll help you understand what's going on with your hair."
This was 2009. I'd been doing color for two years, but I'd just moved to Miami from San Diego. I thought color was color. I was wrong.
My client's name was Persephone. She came in with dark brown hair. She wanted to go blonde. She showed me a photo of beautiful, bright, cool-toned blonde.
I said, "I can get you there."
I lifted her hair to blonde in one session. It looked gorgeous when she left. Bright. Cool. Perfect.
Three weeks later, Persephone called me. She was upset. She said, "Priscilla, my blonde looks yellow and dull. It doesn't look like it did when I left the salon."
She came in. When I looked at her hair, I felt sick. The blonde was brassy. Dull. Nothing like the bright, cool tone I'd given her.
I said, "What happened?"
She said, "Nothing! I went to the beach twice. I used the shampoo you recommended. I did everything you told me to do."
That's when I realized: I had damaged her hair too much during the lightening process. The hair was so porous from damage that it couldn't hold the color. The sun, the salt water, everything was making it worse because the hair structure was compromised.
I said, "I'm so sorry. I lifted your hair too fast. I damaged it. That's why the color won't hold."
She said, "So what do I do?"
I said, "We need to repair your hair first. Then we can maintain the color better."
But the damage was done. She spent another $300 on treatments and toner over the next two months trying to fix what I'd broken in one session.
She eventually stopped coming to me. I don't blame her.
I went home that night and couldn't sleep. I kept thinking: I took $485 from her and gave her hair that couldn't hold color. I didn't understand that healthy hair is what makes color last.
The next day, I asked every colorist in the salon: how do you make color last in Miami? They all said the same thing: you have to prioritize hair health. You can't just focus on getting the color right. If the hair is damaged, the color will fade in weeks no matter how good it looks when they leave.
I spent the next year learning everything about bond builders, protein treatments, and how to repair damaged hair. I changed my entire approach to color.
That failure with Persephone changed everything. I'll never forget her or the lesson she taught me.
The answer is simple, but it's not what most people expect. It's not always about the color itself. It's about the health of your hair.
Evangeline said to me, "So my hair is damaged?"
I said, "Think of your hair like a beautiful, expensive fabric. If the fabric is damaged, with tiny rips and holes, it won't hold dye well. But if the fabric is smooth and strong, the color will look rich and vibrant."
Here in Miami, the combination of intense sun, humidity, salt water, and chlorine creates the perfect storm for hair damage. That damage is what's really stealing your color's vibrancy.
When Evangeline complained about dry hair, I said, "Let me feel your hair."
I touched it. It felt mushy when wet. Stretchy. Weak.
I said, "Your hair isn't just dry. It's structurally damaged. There are two main types of issues your hair can face."
Moisture loss: This is when your hair is dehydrated. It feels rough, tangles easily, and lacks shine.
Structural damage: This is when the internal structure of your hair, the protein bonds that give it strength, is actually broken. This happens from bleaching, heat styling, and UV exposure.
I said to Evangeline, "Just adding moisture to damaged hair won't fix the underlying problem. It's like watering a plant with broken stems. You have to repair the structure first."
She said, "So how do we fix it?"
I said, "Professional treatments. They go far beyond your at-home conditioner."
You've probably heard of treatments like Olaplex.
Evangeline said, "I've heard of that. What does it do?"
I said, "Inside every strand of hair are millions of tiny bonds called disulfide bonds. When we color your hair, especially when doing blonde, some of these bonds break. Heat from your flat iron and sun exposure breaks them too."
A bond-building treatment goes inside the hair strand and rebuilds those broken bonds.
I said, "This doesn't just make your hair feel better. It makes it fundamentally stronger from the inside out. When your hair is strong, your color looks better and lasts longer."
Evangeline said, "How much does this cost?"
I said, "An Olaplex treatment is $75. We do it right after we rinse your color. It helps seal the cuticle, lock in the color, and repair the bonds."
She went quiet. She said, "So I should have done this with my balayage?"
I said, "Yes. It would have protected your color investment."
Day 1, The Treatment
Evangeline came in for a color refresh and Olaplex treatment. I toned her brassy blonde back to cool tones. Then I applied the Olaplex treatment.
When I finished, she looked in the mirror. She said, "It looks so much better. But will it stay this time?"
I said, "With the treatment, yes. Your hair is stronger now. It'll hold the color better."
Week 2
Evangeline texted me: "My color still looks fresh! Usually by week 2 it's already looking dull. This is amazing."
Week 4
Evangeline went to the beach. She texted me: "I went to Surfside Beach yesterday. I was so worried my color would fade. It still looks good!"
Week 6
Evangeline came in to see me. She said, "Priscilla, my color lasted six weeks and still looks decent. Usually it looks terrible by week 3. The treatment made such a difference."
Month 3
Evangeline was at Whole Foods in Aventura when a woman stopped her. The woman said, "Your blonde is so pretty. Who does your color?"
Evangeline gave her my card.
Two days later, the woman called. Her name was Thessaly. She said, "I met your client Evangeline at Whole Foods. She said you do treatments with the color that make it last longer. Can you help me? My blonde always fades so fast."
Thessaly came in. She said, "How much is a balayage with treatment?"
I said, "Balayage is $485. Olaplex treatment is $75. Total is $560."
She hesitated. She said, "That's expensive."
I said, "I know. But think of it this way: you invest in beautiful hair color, but if the canvas is damaged, the masterpiece won't last. The treatment is insurance that protects your color investment."
She thought about it. She said, "Okay. I'm tired of my color fading in three weeks."
I did Thessaly's balayage with Olaplex. When I finished, she looked in the mirror and started crying. She said, "This is the most beautiful blonde I've ever had."
Month 2, Thessaly's Follow-Up
Thessaly texted me: "My blonde still looks amazing at 8 weeks! I've never had color last this long. The treatment was worth every penny."
She sent me three more clients over the next four months.
Now, let's talk about our biggest enemy in South Florida: humidity.
My client Seraphina came in and said, "I have frizzy hair. It's unmanageable in this humidity. Can you help?"
I said, "We have an incredible solution called ProAddiction. This is not your old-school keratin treatment that just coats the hair. ProAddiction is a true repair and smoothing therapy."
It works by replenishing the amino acids your hair has lost, rebuilding the strand while smoothing the cuticle.
Seraphina said, "How much is it?"
I said, "$425. It lasts about four months."
She said, "Will it really work in Miami humidity?"
I said, "Yes. It's one of my favorite services because it creates smooth, shiny, frizz-free hair that is actually healthier."
Seraphina got the ProAddiction treatment. Two weeks later, she texted me: "I walked around outside for an hour yesterday. My hair stayed smooth. I can't believe it. This changed my life."
So, how do you know what your hair needs?
Evangeline asked me this. She said, "How do I know if my hair needs protein or moisture?"
I said, "Here's a trick. When your hair is wet, gently take one strand and pull on it lightly."
If it stretches and stretches without bouncing back, or feels gummy: Your hair needs protein. It has lost its internal support structure.
If it doesn't stretch at all and snaps immediately: Your hair needs moisture. It's brittle and dehydrated.
I tested Evangeline's hair. It stretched and stretched. I said, "You need protein. Your hair has lost its structure."
Most of my clients, especially those with color-treated hair, need a balance of both. That's why a professional consultation is so important.
Building healthy hair is a partnership between what we do in the salon and what you do at home.
In the salon: I recommend a professional treatment at least every other haircut, or with every single color service.
At home: A weekly high-quality mask is non-negotiable.
We have amazing products from Oribe and Davines that continue the work we started in the salon.
Can I get a treatment and color on the same day?
Evangeline asked me this. She said, "Can I do both today?"
I said, "Absolutely! It's actually the best way to do it. We perform the treatment right after rinsing your color. Your hair will leave healthier than it came in."
Will a treatment weigh my fine hair down?
Seraphina asked me this. She has fine hair. She said, "I'm worried it'll make my hair flat."
I said, "Not if we choose the right one. A lightweight protein treatment will add strength without weight."
Is it really worth the extra cost?
Thessaly asked me this before her first treatment. She said, "$75 extra seems like a lot."
I said, "In the long run, it saves you from needing more frequent color appointments or color corrections. It's insurance for your investment."
Let's create a plan to get you the strongest, shiniest hair of your life.
Evangeline sent me a DM last week. She said, "I just sent you another client. My coworker asked why my blonde still looks so good after two months. I told her about the treatments. She's calling tomorrow."
That's what this is about.
