Extensions are an investment. Most of our Bay Harbor Islands clients spend $600 to $1,200 on a full install, then another $200 to $400 every 6 to 8 weeks on maintenance. The install looks flawless the day you walk out. Two weeks later, after humidity, saltwater, and a couple of beach days, the wefts start to show texture the natural hair does not have, the tape lines lift slightly, or the ends look drier than the roots. This is not a bad install. This is what happens when human hair extensions absorb moisture at a different rate than your bio hair in a climate where the dew point sits above 65°F most of the year.
At LAHH Salon we install tape-ins, hand-tied wefts, and k-tip extensions daily. We also see every version of what goes wrong when clients do not adjust their routine for Miami. Here is what actually happens to extensions in humidity, why it happens, and the specific changes that keep them looking consistent.
Human hair extensions are cuticle hair, which means the outermost layer of the hair shaft is intact and all cuticles align in the same direction. This prevents tangling and gives extensions their smooth finish. Your natural hair grows from your scalp with oil glands that coat the shaft as it emerges. Extensions do not have that. They dry out faster, and when they encounter humidity they pull moisture from the air to compensate.
Miami's average relative humidity runs 70% to 80% year-round. When extensions absorb that moisture the cuticle layer swells. If your natural hair is chemically treated, colored, or heat-styled regularly, it also swells in humidity but at a different rate because the porosity is different. This is not a quality issue. Virgin Remy extensions and budget synthetic fiber both react to humidity. The difference is how much they swell and how fast they dry out afterward. Lower-grade extensions swell more because the cuticle layer is damaged or stripped during processing.
We offer three primary extension methods at LAHH: tape-ins, hand-tied wefts, and k-tips. Each reacts to humidity differently because the install method affects how close the extension sits to the scalp and how much of your natural oil reaches the weft.
Tape-in extensions start at $400 and last 6 to 8 weeks between moves. The adhesive tape bonds a thin weft to a sandwich of your natural hair. Because the weft sits flat against the scalp, your natural scalp oil can travel down the first inch or two of the extension. This keeps the top of the weft conditioned. The ends, however, sit 12 to 18 inches away from any oil source and dry out first.
In Miami humidity, tape-ins absorb moisture at the ends while the top stays relatively conditioned. The visible result: the bottom half of the extension looks thicker or frizzier than the top half. If you swim in saltwater or pool chlorine without rinsing immediately, the salt or chlorine bonds to the hair shaft and pulls even more moisture from the air. The weft swells, the cuticle lifts, and the hair tangles.
Tape-in maintenance in Miami requires a leave-in conditioner on the bottom third of the weft every day and a rinse within 30 minutes of leaving the ocean or pool. Skip the rinse twice and you will see matting at the nape.
Hand-tied wefts are sewn onto small braids created from your natural hair. The weft sits slightly farther from the scalp than tape-ins, which means less natural oil reaches the extension. The install itself is more secure in humidity because there is no adhesive to break down, but the hair shaft still swells when it absorbs moisture.
Hand-tied wefts work well for clients who swim frequently or spend time outdoors in Miami because the install does not rely on tape or glue. The trade-off: the weft dries out faster than tape-ins and requires a heavier conditioner on the mid-lengths and ends. We recommend a silicone-based serum on the last 4 to 6 inches of the weft before any outdoor activity. Silicone creates a barrier that slows moisture absorption.
Hand-tied wefts also add more weight to the natural hair than tape-ins. In high humidity, when your natural hair swells and the extension swells at a different rate, that weight can create tension at the braid line. Clients with fine or chemically damaged hair sometimes report scalp soreness after a humid day. This is not the install pulling. This is the hair shaft swelling under tension.
K-tips use a keratin bond applied to small sections of natural hair. The bond is heat-sealed and sits close to the scalp. Because each extension is applied individually, the install looks the most natural and moves the most freely. The downside in Miami: each bond is a point where moisture can penetrate.
Keratin bonds are hydrophobic, which means they repel water. But the bond is applied to your natural hair, and if that natural hair is porous, moisture travels up the hair shaft and reaches the extension anyway. The bond itself does not break down in humidity, but the hair inside the bond swells. Over time, this can cause the bond to slide down the hair shaft slightly, especially if the natural hair is fine or slippery.
K-tips require the most aftercare in Miami. We tell clients to avoid products with sulfates or high alcohol content because both dry out the bond and make it brittle. A weekly deep conditioning mask on the mid-lengths and ends keeps the extension hydrated without over-softening the bond.
This is the complaint we hear most often from clients who live near the beach or spend weekends on boats. Their natural hair looks fine. The extensions look like a different texture.
Extensions frizz when the cuticle layer lifts. The cuticle is a series of overlapping scales that lie flat when the hair is healthy and conditioned. When the hair is dry, the scales lift to pull moisture from the air. In Miami, where the air is saturated, the cuticle opens wide and stays open. Once the cuticle is lifted, the hair shaft is exposed and the scales catch on each other. That is frizz.
Your natural hair might stay smooth because your scalp is producing oil that coats the cuticle and keeps it closed. Extensions do not get that oil. Even if you apply a leave-in conditioner, the product sits on the surface of the hair. It does not close the cuticle the way natural sebum does. The only way to close the cuticle on extensions is heat. A flat iron or blow dryer on medium heat with a heat protectant will temporarily seal the cuticle and smooth the frizz. Clients ask whether they can swim with extensions. The answer is yes, but the rinse afterward is not optional. Saltwater is worse than chlorine because salt crystals bond to the hair shaft and do not rinse out with water alone. Those crystals sit on the hair and pull moisture from the air. The hair swells, the cuticle lifts, and the salt creates friction between the hair strands. This leads to tangling and matting, especially at the nape where the hair rubs against your neck and shoulders.
Chlorine is a chemical bond. It strips the hair's natural moisture and opens the cuticle. In high concentrations, chlorine can also lighten the extensions slightly, which creates a color mismatch between the natural hair and the weft. This is more noticeable on darker extensions.
The protocol after swimming: rinse the extensions with fresh water within 30 minutes. Use a sulfate-free shampoo within 2 hours if possible. Apply a leave-in conditioner to the mid-lengths and ends while the hair is still damp, then let it air dry or blow dry on low heat. Skip the rinse once and you might get away with it. Skip it twice in a week and you will see buildup and texture change.
We also recommend a chelating shampoo once every two weeks for clients who swim regularly. Chelating shampoo removes mineral buildup from hard water, chlorine, and salt. Miami's tap water is moderately hard, which means it contains calcium and magnesium. Those minerals coat the hair shaft over time and prevent conditioner from penetrating. A chelating shampoo strips that buildup and resets the hair.
Not every leave-in conditioner is designed for extensions. Many contain ingredients that build up on the hair shaft or coat the weft so heavily that it looks greasy. In Miami, where you are already fighting humidity, a heavy product makes the problem worse.
We recommend lightweight serums with silicone (dimethicone or cyclomethicone) on the ends of the extensions. Silicone creates a barrier that slows moisture absorption without weighing the hair down. Apply it to damp hair before blow drying or to dry hair before going outside. A pea-sized amount is enough for 18 inches of extensions.
Avoid products with high alcohol content. Alcohol dries out the hair shaft and makes the cuticle brittle. Once the cuticle is damaged, it cannot close properly, and the hair will frizz no matter how much conditioner you apply. Check the ingredient list: if alcohol is in the top five ingredients, skip it.
Deep conditioning masks work, but only if you apply them correctly. Extensions do not have a scalp to draw moisture from, so the mask needs to sit on the hair long enough to penetrate the cuticle. Apply the mask to the mid-lengths and ends, avoid the root area where the weft is attached, and leave it on for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse with cool water to close the cuticle, then blow dry on medium heat. A weekly mask keeps the extensions hydrated and reduces frizz.
Oil-based products (argan oil, coconut oil, jojoba oil) are hit or miss. They work well for clients with coarse or textured natural hair because the hair can absorb the oil. For clients with fine hair, oil sits on the surface and makes the extensions look greasy. If you use oil, apply it to the ends only and use less than you think you need. You can always add more. You cannot remove excess oil without washing.
Tape-ins and k-tips rely on a bond to stay in place. That bond is affected by moisture, heat, and the natural oil from your scalp. In Miami, all three are present most of the time.
Tape-in adhesive breaks down when it gets wet repeatedly and does not dry completely. If you shower, swim, or sweat heavily and then pull your hair into a ponytail while it is still damp, the adhesive stays wet for hours. Over time, the bond weakens and the tape begins to slip. This is more common in clients who work out daily or spend significant time in air-conditioned environments where their hair does not dry quickly.
The fix: let your hair dry completely before tying it back. If you need to put it up immediately after washing, use a loose clip instead of a tight elastic. Avoid sleeping with wet extensions. The friction between the wet hair and the pillow breaks down the adhesive faster than anything else.
K-tip bonds shift when the natural hair becomes too slippery. This happens when you over-condition the root area or use a product with silicone near the scalp. The bond cannot grip slippery hair, so it slides down the hair shaft. The fix: apply conditioner from the mid-lengths down, never at the root. If you use a leave-in spray, hold the bottle 6 inches from your head and mist lightly. Do not saturate the root area.
Hand-tied wefts do not slip as often because they are sewn to braids, but the braids can loosen in humidity. When your natural hair swells, the braid expands slightly. When the hair dries and contracts, the braid loosens. Over time, this causes the weft to shift or feel less secure. The fix: a maintenance appointment every 6 to 8 weeks to re-tighten the braids.
Air drying sounds like the gentlest option, but in Miami it is often the worst. Air drying takes 2 to 3 hours in high humidity, and during that time the cuticle stays open and the hair absorbs moisture continuously. By the time the hair is dry, the cuticle is fully lifted and the hair is frizzy.
Blow drying on medium heat with a heat protectant closes the cuticle faster and gives you more control over the texture. Use a paddle brush or a round brush to smooth the hair as you dry. Direct the airflow down the hair shaft, not across it. Blowing air across the hair lifts the cuticle. Blowing air down the shaft smooths it.
For clients who do not want to heat-style daily, we recommend a microfiber towel or a t-shirt to blot the hair after washing. Regular towels create friction that lifts the cuticle. Microfiber absorbs water without roughing up the hair shaft. Blot the hair, do not rub it. Then apply a leave-in conditioner and let the hair air dry halfway. Finish with a blow dryer on low heat for the last 10 minutes. This method reduces heat exposure while still closing the cuticle.
The biggest mistake: treating extensions like natural hair. Extensions do not self-regulate. They do not produce oil. They do not repair themselves. Once the cuticle is damaged, it stays damaged until you replace the weft.
Clients also underestimate how much Miami's climate accelerates wear. Extensions that last 12 weeks in a dry climate might only last 8 weeks here. The humidity, salt air, and UV exposure all degrade the hair shaft faster. If you live near the beach or spend significant time outdoors, plan for more frequent maintenance.
Another common error: using the same products on the extensions that you use on your natural hair. Your natural hair might tolerate a clarifying shampoo once a week. Extensions do not. Clarifying shampoos strip moisture, and extensions cannot replace that moisture on their own. Use a sulfate-free shampoo designed for color-treated or chemically processed hair. These shampoos are gentler and preserve the cuticle layer.
Finally, clients wait too long between maintenance appointments. By the time the extensions look bad, the damage is already done. The cuticle is lifted, the ends are split, and no amount of conditioning will fix it. Maintenance appointments every 6 to 8 weeks catch problems early and extend the life of the install.
Can you swim in the ocean with tape-in extensions? Yes, but you need to rinse the extensions with fresh water within 30 minutes of leaving the ocean. Multiple passes at high heat damage the cuticle and make frizz worse over time.
