A woman named Jessica walked into LAHH Salon last month looking absolutely miserable. She'd gotten extensions installed at another salon six weeks earlier, right before Memorial Day weekend. They'd looked gorgeous for exactly two weeks. Then she spent a Saturday at South Beach, and by Sunday morning, the hair at her roots was matted into these tight little knots she couldn't brush out.
"I spent $3,500 on these," she said, nearly in tears. "And now I look like I haven't brushed my hair in a month. I don't know what I did wrong."
I've been doing hair here in Bay Harbor for over 15 years, and I own this salon. Jessica's story breaks my heart because it's so preventable. Miami is absolutely brutal on extensions if you don't know what you're doing. The humidity alone is enough to wreck them if your installation wasn't done right or if you're not maintaining them properly. Add in salt water, chlorine, and UV exposure? You need a completely different approach than you would in, say, Denver.
That's the conversation most salons don't have with clients before installation. They show you gorgeous inspiration photos, they quote you a price, and they send you on your way. Then you're shocked three weeks later when your hair looks nothing like those photos anymore.
Let me tell you what actually works. Not generic advice from some blog. Real strategies I've developed over 15 years of fixing disasters and keeping Miami women's extensions looking flawless through our insane summers.
Getting extensions isn't like picking a lipstick shade. Your hair has a unique story. Its density, its texture, how it behaves when you walk out the door into that wall of humidity we get in July.
Jessica's previous salon had given her tape-ins without asking a single question about her lifestyle. She told me she goes to the beach almost every weekend. She's training for a triathlon, so she's swimming laps in a chlorinated pool four days a week. Her hair is naturally very fine and prone to tangling.
Tape-ins were literally the worst possible choice for her lifestyle and hair type. Of course they failed.
When I do consultations, I need to know everything. I examine your hair's health closely. Is it strong enough? Is your scalp happy? Sometimes people come in wanting extensions when their hair is actually too damaged to support them yet. I'll tell you that honestly, even if it means losing the sale, because starting with an unhealthy foundation guarantees failure.
I need to know about your real life. Are you like Jessica, training for races and living at the beach? Are you spending weekends on a boat off Bal Harbour? Or are you mostly in air-conditioned offices and your biggest hair challenge is the walk from your car to the building?
For Jessica, I recommended hand-tied wefts using the Invisible Bead Method. They lie flat, they're completely secure even with intense physical activity, and because there's no adhesive, they won't break down from water exposure the way tape-ins do.
"Why didn't my other salon tell me this?" she asked.
Because most salons want to sell you whatever method they're most comfortable installing, regardless of whether it actually fits your life.
Let's talk money, because I'm tired of clients being shocked by maintenance costs they didn't know were coming.
Jessica's original salon quoted her $3,500 for installation. That seemed straightforward. What they didn't tell her was that move-up appointments would be $400 every six to eight weeks. They also didn't mention she'd need professional treatments to keep the hair healthy in our climate, which are another $85 each.
By the time she came to me, she'd had one disastrous move-up appointment at her original salon where they'd done it so roughly she had bald patches. She was out $3,900 total for extensions that had lasted eight weeks before becoming unwearable.
Here's what I told her. The installation is one investment. But the ongoing maintenance is what protects that investment. You wouldn't buy a gorgeous car and then never change the oil, right?
Maintenance appointments, whether you call them move-ups or re-applications, typically run between $175 and $500 every six to eight weeks, depending on the method and how much work is involved. I charge $350 for Jessica's Invisible Bead move-ups because they take me about two and a half hours to do properly.
What am I actually doing during that appointment? As your natural hair grows, the point where the extension attaches moves down and away from your scalp. During a move-up, I gently remove the wefts or adjust the beads, I examine your natural hair thoroughly for any issues, sometimes I do a clarifying treatment to remove buildup, and then I re-attach everything closer to the scalp where it should be.
This isn't optional maintenance. This is what prevents tangling, keeps the extensions looking seamless, and protects the health of your natural hair underneath.
Jessica is now six months into wearing her new extensions. She's had four move-up appointments at $350 each. Her total investment is $4,900 over six months, and her hair still looks absolutely perfect. She can swim, she can work out, she can live her life without constantly worrying about her extensions falling apart.
"I'm actually spending less than I would have at my old salon," she realized at her last appointment, "because I'm not having to replace ruined hair every two months."
Exactly.
Here's what nobody warned Jessica about at her first salon. Miami humidity makes hair swell. That swelling can affect bonds and cause matting if the installation wasn't done correctly or if moisture gets trapped at the roots.
Our sun is intense. UV rays fade color in extensions just like they fade everything else. Salt and chlorine are incredibly drying. If you love the water here, which most of us do, your extensions need extra protection.
After her beach disaster, Jessica was terrified to swim. "I don't want to go through that again," she said.
I taught her exactly what I do with my own extensions. Before you get in the ocean or pool, thoroughly wet your hair with clean water from a water bottle or shower. Then apply a leave-in conditioner. I personally love the Olaplex No. 6 Bond Smoother for this. What you're doing is saturating the hair with clean water and sealing it with product so it doesn't absorb as much salt or chlorine.
Braid your hair loosely or put it in a low bun. Don't leave it loose to tangle in the waves.
As soon as you're done swimming, rinse thoroughly with fresh water. When you get home, wash with a gentle sulfate-free shampoo and deep condition. I recommend the Pureology Hydrate line for extension clients because it's gentle but effective at removing buildup without stripping the hair.
For daily humidity protection, I have Jessica using the Living Proof No Frizz Vanishing Oil. It's lightweight enough that it doesn't cause slippage at the bonds, but it seals the cuticle and blocks moisture from the air. Heavy oils can make wefts slip, so you have to be careful about what you use.
Jessica follows this routine religiously now. She's been swimming three to four times a week for six months, and her extensions still look brand new at every move-up appointment.
"I can't believe I can actually have long hair and still live my life," she told me last time she was in. "I thought I had to choose."
You don't have to choose. You just have to know what you're doing.
I tell all my clients to book their next move-up before they leave each appointment. Jessica comes in every seven weeks like clockwork now. But life happens. Sometimes appointments get pushed back, and you need to know what to watch for.
Your hair will tell you when it's ready for maintenance. If you notice you can feel the beads or bonds more than usual when you touch your scalp, that's a sign. If there's more tangling or shedding right at the root than you've been experiencing, that's another one. If the wefts don't feel as secure against your scalp, definitely time to call.
Jessica learned this the hard way with her tape-ins. She'd noticed they were feeling loose but thought she was imagining it. Two weeks later, they were sliding down and matting.
"I should have called you sooner," she said when she finally came in.
Now she knows better. Seeing these signs doesn't mean something's wrong. It just means your hair has grown and it's time for a refresh. Staying on schedule is the single best thing you can do to protect your natural hair and get maximum life from your extensions.
Will extensions damage my natural hair?
Not if they're applied, maintained, and removed by someone who knows what they're doing. Jessica's tape-ins caused damage because they were installed with too much tension and she waited too long between appointments. Damage almost always comes from improper installation, skipping maintenance, or trying to remove them yourself at home.
My entire philosophy at this salon is built around healthy hair first. I examine Jessica's natural hair closely at every move-up. Six months in, it's actually in better condition than when she started because the Invisible Bead Method distributes weight so evenly and creates zero tension on her scalp.
How long will the actual extension hair last?
With high-quality human hair and proper care, the hair itself can often be reused for up to a year, sometimes longer. The six-to-eight-week timeline is for the application, not the hair. We move the same hair back up to the scalp during maintenance visits.
Jessica's on month six with the same hair, and it still looks and feels beautiful because she's followed my care routine and hasn't skipped appointments.
Can I still get my hair colored?
Absolutely. We do this all the time. Many clients schedule their root touch-ups or balayage refreshes to coincide with their move-up appointments. It's efficient, and I can make sure everything blends perfectly.
Jessica actually just added some subtle highlights at her last appointment. The extensions and her natural hair blend so seamlessly you can't tell where one ends and the other begins.
What's removal like if I decide I don't want them anymore?
It's gentle and methodical if it's done right. I use professional solutions and tools designed specifically to break down bonds or open beads without pulling or damaging your natural hair. It should never hurt. Ever.
Jessica's original salon had removed her tape-ins so roughly she had bald patches. That's not normal. That's incompetence.
Jessica came to me looking miserable and ready to give up on extensions entirely. She walked out of her last appointment literally stopping to take selfies in the salon before she even left.
"I finally have the hair I've always wanted," she said, "and I can actually live my life while having it."
That transformation happens when someone takes the time to understand your specific needs instead of trying to force you into whatever's easiest for them. It happens when you understand the real maintenance commitment upfront instead of being blindsided by it later. It happens when you work with someone who cares more about your hair's health than making a quick sale.
Extensions are a commitment. But they don't have to be complicated or scary. With the right approach and honest guidance, you can have the hair of your dreams that thrives in Miami's climate instead of being destroyed by it.
